John has been known to throw people down the stairs and fling open doors for changing staff. He is thought to be the ghost of a former bouncer who was stabbed to death by a prostitute.

The Red Onion Saloon is open April through September. During the winter, the saloon is extremely cold due to the lack of insulation. Visitors are encouraged to wear warm clothes and bring a blanket. The Red Onion Saloon is also open for guided tours, and visitors can purchase period costumes to wear while they visit.

Another ghost that has been reported at the Red Onion Saloon is Lydia, a former prostitute. Although this ghost isn’t known to cause harm, it is said to be hostile to male visitors. Male guests have reported feeling hands on their legs and hearing whispers.

Near downtown Skagway, Alaska is a cemetery that honors the infamous Gold Rush. Just 1.7 miles from the downtown area, it can be found off the Klondike Highway. After driving down the dirt road, you’ll see a gold painted rock, then a list of names, and finally, a map of the cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of many unsavory characters from the Gold Rush, including Jefferson “Soapy” Smith and Frank Reid. This cemetery is just one of several historic cemeteries in Skagway.

The cemetery is free to visit, and is a great stop on Skagway tours. There’s also a SMART Bus that runs in a loop that picks up passengers on the east side of the street and returns them to the downtown area. It costs $5 per person to ride the bus, and you can also get a one-way ticket for $2.
